A good leather bag stays with you for years, which is exactly why it wears. Many people assume that once the strap tears or the zip stops working, the story is over. In practice, almost everything that reaches our Petah Tikva workshop goes back into full use, and often the repair is far simpler than it looks.
The Common Faults — All of Them Repairable
- A strap that tore or pulled out of its seam
- A jammed zip, teeth that will not close, or a broken slider
- A seam that opened at a corner or along the side
- A broken buckle, clip or metal ring
- A torn inner lining, or one that came away from the seam
- Corners and edges worn down by use
Straps — The First Thing to Give Way
The strap carries the entire weight of the bag, so it is nearly always the first to tear, usually right where it joins the body. In many cases that point can be stitched and reinforced so it ends up stronger than it was originally. When the strap itself has worn along its whole length, it can be replaced with a new one matched to the colour and style of the bag.
A Zip on a Bag — You Do Not Always Replace Everything
Very often the zip itself is perfectly sound and only the slider, the small part you pull, has worn down and stopped catching the teeth. In that case replacing the slider alone is enough. If the teeth themselves are damaged or missing, the whole zip is replaced. Both are routine work, including on large bags and suitcases.
A tip from the workshop: if a zip jams, do not keep pulling hard. Forcing it bends the teeth and turns a small repair into a real problem. Better to stop and bring it in as it is.
Wallets, Belts and Straps
The same logic applies to small leather goods. A belt that stretched or whose hole sits in the wrong place, a buckle that worked loose, a wallet with an open seam, or a cracked watch strap are all short jobs that put an everyday item back in service. Small pieces like these also come back to you especially quickly.
When It Is Worth Repairing, and When Not
The simple rule is to look at the condition of the leather itself. If the body is intact and the leather is still healthy, repair is almost always worth it: you get back an item you already love instead of hunting for a replacement. If the leather has crumbled or cracked across the whole bag, we will tell you honestly rather than sell you unnecessary work.
