Repair or Buy New? An Honest Guide for Clothes and Shoes

We all know the moment: the zip on your favourite coat jams, the sole of your shoes starts to peel away, or a pair of trousers just doesn't sit the way it used to. The first question is always the same — repair it, or simply buy new? The answer isn't the same every time, so we've put together a simple guide to help you decide with confidence.

When repairing is almost always worth it

  • The piece is made from quality fabric or good leather, with strong stitching and solid construction
  • The problem is small and specific compared with the whole item — a zip, an open seam, a worn sole or heel
  • It has sentimental value: an old coat, shoes that have been with you for years, a dress with a story
  • It's an expensive or well-made piece, and a similar replacement would cost far more than the repair
  • A garment that's already been tailored to you — it's a shame to give up a fit that's finally perfect

In most of these cases, a professional repair gives the item years of extra life — for a fraction of the cost of a similar new one, and without giving up what you loved about it in the first place.

When it's honestly better to replace

We believe in honest advice, even when it means saying 'it's not worth it.' When the fabric itself has worn thin or stretched throughout, when leather has dried and cracked too deeply to feed and restore, or when it's a cheaply made item to begin with and the repair would cost close to its value — sometimes replacing really is the right call. In those cases we'll tell you up front, without selling you a fix you don't need.

Shoes and leather — a special case

With shoes and leather in particular, repair pays off more often than you'd think. A good pair is built to last for years, and the sole, heel and finish are wear-and-tear parts that are meant to be replaced. A new sole, a re-stitched seam, a fresh coat of colour, or a gentle stretch to a comfortable size — each of these brings a shoe back to life without giving up the comfort it has already earned.

Not just saving money — a smarter choice for the planet

Every garment mended and every pair of shoes given a longer life is one less item in landfill. Fast fashion creates an enormous amount of waste, and repairing is one of the simplest ways to consume thoughtfully — saving money and looking after the environment in the same breath.

A tip from the workshop: before you throw something out, ask yourself one question — is the repair clearly cheaper than a similar new item? If so, it's almost always worth giving it a second chance.
