Some shoes still have an excellent sole, are comfortable and fit perfectly, and simply look tired. Faded colour, scuffs at the toe, edges gone pale. Many people assume that is the end, but this is exactly where professional renewal makes the biggest difference, because the foundation of the shoe is still perfectly sound.
What Renewal Involves
Renewal is not only about colour. It is a process of several stages, each doing a different part of the work:
- A deep clean that lifts dirt out of seams and creases
- Feeding the leather, restoring flexibility and preventing cracking
- Filling and recolouring scuffs and faded areas
- Separate work on the edges and welt, where wear shows most
- Polishing that brings back shine and an even tone
Scuffs — What Disappears and What Only Fades
Here it is important to be honest. A scuff that only reached the colour layer disappears almost entirely, and after renewal you will not find where it was. A deep cut that went into the leather itself is a different story: it can be filled, coloured and smoothed so it barely reads from a distance, but up close and in direct light it will still be visible. We will show you the difference in advance so you know what to expect.
Can the Colour Be Changed Completely?
Darkening a shoe by a shade or two is standard work and usually gives a beautiful, even result. Lightening a dark shoe is nearly impossible, because the colour has already soaked into the leather. A drastic change, from brown to black for example, is sometimes possible but will almost always look like a shoe that was painted rather than a shoe of that colour, so we generally advise against it.
A tip from the workshop: do not try to cover a scuff with polish in a close but not matching shade. Polish soaks into the scuff more heavily than into the surrounding leather, so instead of hiding it, it highlights it — and that is hard to undo.
What About Suede and Canvas?
Suede needs a completely different approach from smooth leather: the right brush, dry cleaning, and lifting the nap rather than polishing it. It has its own refresher colours that restore an even tone. The key is not to use smooth-leather products on it, since they flatten the nap and leave shiny patches that are difficult to reverse.
