How Much Does It Cost to Hem or Shorten Trousers? What Sets the Price

You found trousers that fit you perfectly — they're just a little too long. It happens to almost everyone, which is exactly why hemming is the most common alteration we do at our workshop in Petah Tikva. The first question everyone asks is 'how much does it cost?', and the honest answer is: it depends on a few practical things. Let's walk through exactly what.

So how much does it cost to hem trousers?

There's no single price for every pair, and that's actually in your favour — you pay for the work your garment genuinely needs, not a flat rate. Here's what determines the price:

  • The fabric — a delicate weave, a heavy wool, or stiff denim each need a different approach and needle
  • A plain hem versus keeping the original factory hem on jeans (the 'European' hem)
  • Lined trousers versus unlined — a lining adds an extra step of work
  • A single pair or several brought in together
  • Urgency — whether you need it today or tomorrow (express)

Plain hem or keeping the original jeans hem?

With jeans there are two ways to shorten them. A plain hem simply folds and re-stitches the edge — clean, quick and economical. Keeping the original stitch (the European hem) removes the excess from higher up and puts the original edge back on, so the jeans look factory-made, faded edge and all. It's finer work, which is why it affects the price.

Why it's far cheaper than buying new

Trousers you already love — ones that fit your shape and are made of good fabric — are worth far more than a random new pair. Hemming costs only a fraction of what a new pair costs, and don't forget that the new pair would probably need hemming too. Instead of giving up on a great garment, an hour of handwork brings it back to a perfect length and years more wear.

Tip from the workshop: bring the shoes you'll wear with the trousers and try them on before we hem. Heel height changes the exact length — that way we mark it spot-on, no guessing.
