Zipper Replacement — Everything You Need to Know (and How Much It Saves You)

A stuck or broken zipper feels like the end of the road for a garment — but in most cases it's the easiest and cheapest thing to fix. Instead of tossing a coat, dress or bag worth hundreds, replacing a zipper restores full function for a fraction of the price.

When is it worth replacing a zipper?

Almost always. Quality coats, jackets, dresses and leather bags were built to last for years. A zipper is a wear-and-tear part — like a sole on a shoe — and replacing it is a natural part of caring for the piece.

  • A coat or jacket whose zipper is stuck or off its track
  • Trousers or a skirt with a broken zipper
  • A bag, suitcase or sleeping bag whose zipper won't close
  • A dress whose back zipper has torn

How much does it cost?

The cost depends on the zipper and the item, but it's almost always a small fraction of the price of something new. A quality zipper (like YKK), professionally fitted, will last for many years.

Tip from the workshop: don't force a stuck zipper — it can tear the fabric around it. Better to bring it in as is.
